Workday Canvas

Microtransactions Framework

Allowing end users to complete lightweight tasks in a minimal number of steps without losing context.

Introduction

Microtransactions are one way that we believe we can simplify Workday for our customers. They’re intended to increase the completion rate of frequently used tasks by minimizing the number of steps front-stage users have to interact with. But they’re not the only way to simplify the experience, and they’re not intended to solve all possible use cases for a given flow. We encourage you to consider other methods for solving heavy processes or workflows before deciding to use a microtransaction.

Watch this 5-minute video for an overview of the problem space and how we think microtransactions can alleviate certain problems our end-users encounter.

There are 2 containers that will “house” the microtransaction that an end user will interact with: Modal and Side Panel. Users will have the option to access fields not included in the microtransaction container, so we encourage you to include only the most necessary items in each container that will allow the end user complete the task: The goal is to simplify tasks (and hence designs) to provide users with only the most important items. Fewer fields means fewer decisions for users, which means faster task completion.
